Over the last couple of years we haven’t seen much footage of the elusive Pops, aside from his tricks in Cherry and the occasional Instagram post. He’s not the easiest to track down and he’s not the type of guy you bump into skating LES skatepark. Luckily for us, our friend and filmer Richard Quintero is one of the few people that has been filming occasionally with Pops over the last couple of months. Accumulating some skate mission footage and clips, we thought it was too good to get dusty and lost in some hard drive. With that in mind, we edited the footage and sat down with Pops for a short conversation about his skateboarding and the future of his career.

he’s still so fucking good, especially for someone with absolutely nothing to prove due to an almost mythical status in skateboarding. If his skating isnt up to his own personal standards then that’s one thing, but saying that people dont appreciate what he puts out is bullshit. I agree with that Penny comment- when it comes to your favorite skateboarders you dont care that they might be past their prime, you care about the fact that you still get to see them skate and see how their skating is changing and adapting as they get older. Also an industry giant like Girl/Chocolate never seemed like a good fit for ol’ anthony, or anybody who is worried about maintaining their privacy. Seems like he’d be better off with one of the smaller more independent board companies, of which there are many these days (FA? 3d?).

there was a period leading up to the release of pretty sweet where i’d see pops around, just randomly with no board – before the instagram skate selfie renaissance. his name got dropped from the pretty sweet site along with devine’s, then i saw him in williamsburg one day, no board. rode past him on my bike and asked if he was still going to have a part. this was like a month before the premiere. he said he was going filming “right now.” instead, he peaced himself out by refusing to film a part. yeah. every kid’s insanely good, but anthony, you were on CHOCOLATE, the closest thing to a family in skateboarding, and you threw it away. no one retired your board. no one expected you to start ledge dancing. they just wanted you to give a shit. vincent knows what he’s got. stevie knows what he’s got. you let your privilege get in the way. you know what’s more humiliating than putting out footage you’re not stoked on? putting out footage of yourself explaining that you’d never put out footage you’re not stoked on. guess what? no one is stoked on footage of you staring at spots. no one is stoked on footage of you making fun of a man with a crack addiction that probably never had the opportunities you did and DO. quit blowing it. there are a lot of people that still respect your skill, your creativity and your critical position on what skateboarding has become – but seriously, this particular “candid conversation” is so narcissistic and petty. i just feel bad for you. i hope for a follow up to this, in which you simply skate – the thing we all love to do regardless of our sponsor status or ability. you bite bobby’s spot ethos so hard, but you’re not bobby, because given the same opportunity bobby would have spent the time working for some tricks. like this – http://vimeo.com/66839623 – this, too, could be you. or even this kid – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fO5sePKbl4 – he looks happy. skating.

pops is still trying to blame everyone but himself for the sponsorless situation he’s in. it’s tragic. respect your sponsors by filming clips, kids. otherwise, skate for fun. no shame in that.
