In the second installment of our Welcome to Hell Week, we’re giving you the second half of the recently unearthed tapes Josh Stewart filmed while touring with the Toy Machine team back in the Summer of 1996. Even though this footage is over 20 years old, it’s crazy to see how fucking good these guys were back then. You know, even if you were able to time travel yourself, with all your millennial skate skills and knowledge, back to those days, you still wouldn’t be good enough to rock a demo like Templeton or rip a vert ramp padless like Barley.
Most skaters these days would show up to one of those parking lot demos, take one look at the shitty plywood ramps, and lock themselves in the van with their phone until it was time for dinner. That’s what makes these dudes such legends, their styles are transcendent no matter what obstacles they’re skating. Plus, for better or worse, you just don’t see street grabs like that anymore.
Check out part 2 of Josh’s raw tour tapes above, and, if you missed part 1, take a good look at what you’re doing with your life and then go back and check it out here. We’ve got more in store for the rest of the week too, so tune in tomorrow for an oral history of sorts with one of the guys responsible for “Welcome to Hell.”

This video is proof that Barley was one of the best ever. I know a lot of ex-vert pros. Never seen someone, let alone a street ripper, kill a vert ramp with such smooth effortless finesse and PADLESS!
